“The Guardian” – Book Review | This Man Never Disappoints!
Author: Nicholas Sparks
Genre: Contemporary, Romance, Women’s Fiction
Number of Pages: 434 pages
Julie Barenson’s young husband left her two unexpected gifts before he died: a Great Dane puppy named Singer and the promise that he would always be watching over her. Now, four years have passed. Still living in the small town of Swansboro, North Carolina, 29-year-old Julie is emotionally ready to make a commitment to someone again. But who? Should it be Richard Franklin, the handsome, sophisticated engineer who treats her like a queen? Or Mike Harris, the down-to-earth nice guy who was her husband’s best friend? Choosing one of them should bring her more happiness than she’s had in years. Instead, Julie is soon fighting for her life in a nightmare spawned by a chilling deception and jealousy so poisonous that it has become a murderous desire. (Using the Goodreads Blurb as I couldn’t have expressed better) 😛
I picked this book up with a lot of expectations.. so much so, that I was a bit nervous. I haven’t read much by Nicholas Sparks but he is definitely the reason I started reading this genre at all! But he did it.. and did it better. Nicholas Sparks never disappoints!!
This book was such a surprise from the King of Romance! The heart-wrenching start to the book took a turn and soon it became a mature romance until the twist kicked in and it became a full blown mystery/thriller story! I have read some books where a romance builds in the backdrop of a thriller but in this one the romance is the main hero and the thrill is the part of the story which builds the romance. The relationships in the story grow on their own and the thriller part just brings a complexity into all of it. That being said, I cannot undermine the thrill. It got me extremely anxious at places and thank goodness that I was reading it in a readathon and had no plans of putting the book down anyway.
As for the romance, I don’t think much needs to be said. Nicholas Sparks is kind of the undisputed king of romance, as I have already mentioned before. In ‘The Guardian’ he weaves a story of two very average people in a way that you feel in your heart a pang of fear when things take a negative turn, a gnawing pain when the characters are hurt and an unexplained giddy feeling when everything falls in place. An emotional whirlwind all in all.
The characters are believable and honest to themselves. All the characters are well written and the story is captivating enough to keep you going till the end. Also.. Singer was such a darling. I loved, loved, loved this book!!!!
Recommended to anybody who loves romance and would like to read a romantic story with a twist. The writing is very simple and thus can be a very good book for new readers who are looking for books with simple language but really good content.
