“Jukebox” Book Review
Number of Pages: 173
Jukebox is a collection of 15 short stories selected from the submissions for the 5th edition of the nationwide competition “Melonade” held by Writersmelon.com.
Just like the songs in a jukebox, the stories in this book are random and of different flavours. The stories are divided into three sections:
- Spine chilling drama and suspense
- Quirky, funny and awkward moments
- Poetic love of hopeless romantics
~~I was sent a copy of the book in exchange of an honest review. All views expressed here are completely my own~~
As the name of the book and aforementioned sections suggest, this book is really an anthology with many tastes and flavours. None of the stories are similar and each of them take you to a different zone of thoughts. Some of them make you question life and the society as we know it. Some make you cherish the happy moments you now have, some make you eager to create beautiful memories worth remembering later and some even make you weep, tearing your heart out.
The thing that got me really excited after a few stories was the fact that I didn’t know what to expect. I ignored the one liners written for every story in the contents and would suggest all readers to do the same. It keeps the excitement really heightened! After the first few, I just randomly opened one and started reading it! It was so much fun and sometimes heart-wrenching!! I think I like to torture myself that way.. but well,, don’t we all.. 😛
All the sections had their stars but I undoubtedly enjoyed the “Quirky, funny and awkward moments” section the most. It was simply hilarious. Only one complaint regarding this section.. only two stories?! Why? Why? Why would you do that to us Writersmelon? 🙁
As for the other sections, they were good too. In some of the love stories I felt that a change in the narrative or tone could have made it a lot better. Also, I felt that in some of the stories, the language was made too complicated as if for the need of putting a lot of heavy-duty words in too less a number of pages. I do get it that none of the authors are professionals some of them were so good that I could kind of feel the difference in a few. The spine chilling dramas were truly so! Most of them gave me a reality check for life.. made me question a lot regarding my life and theirs. Unbelievable how a a single decision, a single mistake can change lives and sometimes how we truly feel like a part of the grand scheme of things where everything is pre-planned and we are just playing our roles, where our feelings and wants do not matter.
All in all, I had a great time reading this book and would recommend this to anyone who is looking for and emotional whirlwind of tales and wants to get surprised!!
