“Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda” – Book Review

Author: Becky Albertalli

Publisher: Penguin

Number of Pages: 303

Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now Simon is actually being blackmailed: if he doesn’t play wingman for class clown Martin, his sexual identity will become everyone’s business. Worse, the privacy of Blue, the pen name of the boy he’s been emailing, will be compromised.

With some messy dynamics emerging in his once tight-knit group of friends, and his email correspondence with Blue growing more flirtatious every day, Simon’s junior year has suddenly gotten all kinds of complicated. Now, change-averse Simon has to find a way to step out of his comfort zone before he’s pushed out—without alienating his friends, compromising himself, or fumbling a shot at happiness with the most confusing, adorable guy he’s never met.

My Review:

Oh my god!!! Why hadn’t I read this book earlier? I blame my never-ending TBR.. but honestly now that I have read this and have a goofy idiotic smile on my face.. there is absolutely no excuse that is fair enough! 😀

This is the first LGBT book I read and boy oh boy do I want to read more of these now.. Becky Albertalli has become one of my absolute favorites with this book!

I was amazed with the ease with which the story proceeded.. there was drama, fun, regular teen life and complexities..and not so regular ones 😛 and a very well built mystery! I loved how the romance was built with words and not looks or appearance and with each passing mail the suspense was built. Honestly, I was so excited that I don’t think I could have taken it had the author taken any longer to reveal Blue’s identity. The anticipation was just too much to bear.. 🙁

All the characters.. Simon, his sisters, parents, friends, e-mail boy Blue.. everything was just perfect. If I could.. I would love to be a part of his family! 😀 😉

The subject she chose to write on was so delicate but came out surprisingly well. Not for a moment did I find anything awkward. The flow was perfect and I could feel Simon’s happiness, anticipation, disappointment in the words.. it was not that it didn’t feel different.. it did.. but in a nice way. Opened a whole new place in my mind and heart. Being inside Simon’s head was probably the best way to enter the world of homosexuality. It introduced me to the anxiety, the loneliness, the difficulty and deal around coming out, how it feels being one of them.. when they know nothing is wrong with them, they are perfectly normal but they still can’t be themselves so easily.

Even amidst all this confusion..love is a feeling that can’t be controlled and it doesn’t deserve to be. Love wholly. Love unconditionally. Love without expectations and you’ll always be happy! Becky puts out this message out loud..

It is human nature to judge others but you really can’t do it.. you can’t know who a person is or why he/she is behaves a certain way and most importantly who a person isn’t without being them.. which is not possible.. So better stop judging and prepare yourself for the surprises!!

This is one of those extremely rare books which I want to read and re-read again and again. And probably the only book in a loooong time that I wanted to start re-reading as soon as I finished it!

The movie ‘Love, Simon’ just came out.. thought that would be a great thing until I realized it doesn’t release in my country for another two months! -_-
So, if you are among the lucky people who can catch the movie now.. I am so envious! I mean..really!! Not even kidding at this point.. And if you are like me.. in the eternal wait for ‘Love, Simon’ go read or re-read ‘Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda’ NOW! As for me I will just pine for it.. or may be re-read it already! 😛

Edit: I just saw Becky Albertalli post that it is the book’s third birthday today! So yay me on posting this today!!! 😁
