“The Day I Stopped Drinking Milk” Book Review

Life is like a beautiful garden and each encounter/experience is one of the components that make up this garden. When you look around, you see a dash of colours.. the reds, the pinks, yellows, white and an array of greens to soothe your eyes. You notice the beautiful flowers, the pretty lush leaves, but what you fail to notice is the weeds and thorns.. Nevertheless, they are there and when you get too close to the flowers you feel their presence too. The wonderful diversity that held your gaze from afar made everything look pretty and while it made it clear that variations and diversity is what made it so beautiful, a close encounter taught the harsh truth that not only are all components different from each other but there are good ones and bad ones as well.

Reading “The Day I Stopped Drinking Milk” by Sudha Murty made me feel exactly the same. She has come across many different kinds of people on her journey of life which have changed and moulded her life in certain ways. In this collection of short stories she passes on her experiences to the readers in a very simple and lucid language.

This book made me feel a lot of things.. happy, sad, grateful, cautious, thoughtful to name a few. Some of her stories made me believe the world is a better place that I seem to think of it and that there is a lot of good in the world. Some made me believe that you are never too old or helpless to help another soul. Love, old beliefs and faith exists for a reason. But what I really liked was that she didn’t keep her stories confined to the good experiences only. She also showed that not all people are of the same kind and that we shouldn’t generalize. It is upto the individual and that sometimes human nature itself gets the better of us in trying situations. Judge for yourself and then proceed in life and you still may make mistakes and there is nothing wrong in it. To err is human, after all..

I loved the book from the very first story and made it a point to read one story a day. I felt like it kept me grounded and gave me a pearl of wisdom everyday. I can say it definitely made me a better and wiser person. It’s weird but I miss my daily dose of “la vie” . Got to grab the next book by Sudha Murty soon. It will be very unfair to quote any of the favorite story titles as each of the stories was a teacher in it’s own right.

“A fire cannot be extinguished with another fire. It is only water that can make a difference.”
